Even if the breast is not the organ of interest on a radiographic study, abnormalities that appear on the film and in the field of view may warrant evaluation. All radiologists are aware of the phenomenon of “satisfaction of search,” whereby the radiologist finds the abnormality that was suspected (e.g., lung mass) but misses another significant finding (e.g., spine mass) because it is not the region of clinical interest. Radiologists are taught in residency training—and in the real world school of hard knocks—to have a systematic method of search and evaluation so as to minimize this phenomenon. Incidental breast lesions found on non-breast studies should prompt a breast imaging evaluation to sort out the level of suspicion of the finding.
